What we noticed in the jury final for the grand final 2018

We hate to be stating the obvious, but you are finished. Don’t you know vampires should stay away from the sun? (pic by Thomas Hanses/EBU)

Yay, we are at the press center watching the jury final before tomorrow’s Grand Final. This is, as many of you know, the dress rehearsal with a live audience upon which all the juries votes for tomorrow are based, so it matters a lot how the artists are doing at this very moment. Fuckups have been known to happen before and we have been known to report them. This is what we noticed: Continue reading

Our 10 Favorites in the First Semi-Final 2018

Clearly someone forgot to read the list of prohibited items in the arena. (pic by Andres Putting/EBU)

Hurrah! The day of the first semi-final is finally here, and it’s time for us to pick our 10 favorites. This is by no means a proper prediction, it’s the ten songs we would like to see go through to the Grand Final. And the best of luck to those who are trying to predict anything tonight, it will be carnage. As usual you can read our reviews by clicking on the links below. Enjoy the show tonight! What we noticed in the jury final for first semi final

– Where are you when we need you, Tahir? We are in desperately need of a plan here. And not the least some cognac for the Norwegian blogger ladies. (Pic by Andres Putting/EBU)
Yay, we are just done with the jury final for the first semi final and the juries must be having a hard time deciding, because there were some great entries in here and all artists did a great job. We’re super excited about the semi final tomorrow, and of course about the result. This is what we noticed: Continue reading

Bulgaria being bad to the bone

Can five rights turn out to be one big wrong? We’re looking at you, EQUINOX.

We are usually cautious towards so called supergroups formed especially for the purpose of performing in the Eurovision Song Contest. There are probably examples of successful collaborations and feel free to remind us in the comment section, but all we can remember are the car crashes and train wrecks, like Just4Fun for Norway in 91 and more recently Genealogy for Armenia. And don’t you need at least a couple of superstars in order to be entitled to coin the group as super? An X-factor winner, a former backing singer and a couple of American producers doesn’t exactly knock our socks off.

Some thoughts before the grand final

When we discovered the mask didn’t work, we decided to make use of the second largest Norwegian symbol: Our flag. Pic by Thomas Hanses/EBU

Hooray, it’s the national day of all fans: The day of the Eurovision final! As always it is a day of conflicted emotions, as it is also the last day of two weeks of fabulous celebration and partying with amazing artists and fans from all over Europe and Australia. And we have to leave the fantastic city of Kyiv tomorrow, which will be like leaving the newfound love of our lives. Also, we think the hunky guys at the fabulous Druzi café will miss us coming in every morning to cure our carefully crafted hangover with two eggs and an avocado smoothie and more black coffee than any Ukrainian has ever been able to order in one day.

Hit or Miss from Bulgaria?

Sometimes someone shows up and captures the zeitgeist perfectly and Beautiful Mess accurately describes the current situation between Ukraine and Russia right now. Thank God we have the EBU to tidy up!

We’ll gladly admit to being dead wrong about Bulgaria last year. We both underestimated the song and Poli Genova’s radiant performance lighting up Globen like Times Square on New Year’s Eve. To our defense we do not think even Poli’s most avid supporters expected her to almost make the podium giving Bulgaria’s best result to date. Continue reading

First impressions from the first dress rehearsal of the second semi final

Yay, we remembered there were 18 more songs to go and just saw the first dress rehearsal for the second semi final. It is also brewing up to be a great show, of course. The undisputable highlight being our favourite Schlagerboys appearing on the big screen, driving around in a taxi, which we’ve heard is shady business in Stockholm. This is what else to expect:

01 Latvia Justs Heartbeat

Has shown a vast selection of leather jackets, so it is a bit disappointing that he chose the black one for the stage. Maybe he should borrow Poland’s stylist? Other than that, douze points for effort. Will be in the run for best performance in the final together with Hungary’s Freddie.

02 Poland Michał Szpak Color Of Your Life

After the Bosnia & Herzegovina disaster in the first semi final, we are happy there is at least half a cello left for Poland. Michal wants people to sing along, and we can now reveal why you know that melody so easily: it echoes the riff of “I will survive”, which is a message we keep repeating to ourselves every morning these days. Clever little thing that Captain Jack Sparrow. Continue reading

Highlights from the Red Carpet

Last night it was time for the opening party in Stockholm! With the plebeians kept comfortably at arms length, the Eurovision stars finally got to officially meet and greet each other. But before hogging into the free champagne and finger food at the swanky City Hall, they did their schlager duty and had a stroll down the red carpet to show off their finest rags and feathers.

We did of course miss our own Agnete, which was exactly to be expected. We offered to step in, but strangely we never received a reply to that email. Oh well, it’s their loss! As the organizers obviously preferred to keep us safely behind the barriers we made the most out of it and bellowed as loud as we could to catch the stars’ attention. Here’s a few red carpet highlights for you, with pics by yours truly and our buddies over at EBU.

Belarus red carpet
We were happy to see that IVAN picked up our styling tips and showed up on the red carpet without wolves, but with a manbun. Jared Leto might not be that well known in Belarus, but apparently they do read our blog over there. Photo by GEE

London Eurovision – our awards

francois
Hey! WHO took my bottle of vodka? I have only had one this evening!
Yeah, yeah, we know, it’s been TWO whole days since the Eurovision party in London. But like certain Cypriots we needed a while to unwind. And first things first, we have been  super busy trying to translate all the stories Polish media keep writing about us. It sure is awesome to be noticed in a country so huge it would consider our proud capital a little farm village.

Didn’t forget our duties, though. Here are the awards of the GEE jury:

Funkiest woman onstage: Bulgaria’s Poli Genova. What a fabulous gal she is! We are shaving off half our hair and joining her fan club any minute now.

Best performance: France’s Amir. Singing Golden boy. Can we please get that in EuroClub too, hon? Seven a day keeps the blues away – and the GEE girls your biggest fans for life.
