Obrigada, Portugal

As you may NOT have noticed on this blog, Portugal is one of our favorite countries. Apart from their entirely incomprehensible, unpronouncable language and most disturbing love for the so called art of fado, that country has so much to offer. Like sun, sea, sardines, vinho verde and percebes. They also have the prettiest capital in the world, and we wouldn’t mind going there even more often than we already do. That is why we have been secretly rooting for the Portuguese, even when their entries haven’t been among the best. They did give us Ronaldo’s ass…we mean golden right foot, after all, so we knew they had it in them.

Enter a guy with an amazing voice, a super quirky behaviour and the most sincere brown eyes you can ever think of. And he doesn’t even look like a wax figure with his own eyebrow stylist? Safe to say, our acquaintance with Salvador Sobral was a very happy one. What a lovely guy. And what an amazing voice. If he can sing like he sung in the national final with hernia, who knows what he can do without?

And speaking of that, we will make no more mentions of Salvador’s health. Guess it was only a matter of time before the trend of fake news reached Eurovision, but we advise you stay out of it. If we were to demand health certificates from all these artist, we would discover a lot of unpleasantries, mind you.

The song, Amar Pelos Dois, is of the very nostalgic, old jazzballad kind. The kind that makes you dream of distant times, when Lisbon was a majestic harbour of tall ships and Vasco da Gama found pepper in India and singing a ballad in Eurovision still wasn’t a bad thing. Oh, those were the days!

And we’re telling you this ballad really isn’t a bad thing. It is so soft and comforting we can think of nothing better to listen to after a few nights of those ridiculously cheap vodka shots at EuroClub or after Romania or Belarus disturbs any sense of calm we might have left. The title mean “love for both”, so we suspect it is written for us, even.

Just remember we love you right back, Salvador. Obrigada.

Let’s just go for a walk, shall we?

This is a free tranlstion by Carminda H. Proença:

    Amar Pelos Dois
    (Loving for Both of Us)
Se um dia alguém perguntar por mim
(If one day someone asks for me)
Diz que vivi p’ra te amar
(Tell them I lived to love you)
    Antes de ti, só existi
    (Before you, I only existed)
Cansado e sem nada p’ra dar
(Tired and without anything to give)
Meu bem, ouve as minhas preces
(My love, listen to my prayers)
Peço que regresses, que me voltes a querer
(I beg you to return, to love me again)
Eu sei que não se ama sozinho
(I know, one does not love alone)
Talvez devagarinho possas voltar a aprender
(Maybe slowly you could learn again)
Meu bem, ouve as minhas preces
(My love, listen to my prayers)
Peço que regresses, que me voltes a querer
(I beg you to return, to love me again)
Eu sei que não se ama sozinho
(I know, one does not love alone)
Talvez devagarinho possas voltar a aprender
(Maybe slowly you could learn again)
Se o teu coração não quiser ceder
(If your heart doesn’t want to give in)
Não sentir paixão, não quiser sofrer
(Doesn’t feel the passion, doesn’t want to get hurt)
Sem fazer planos do que virá depois
(Without any plans of what may come)
O meu coração pode amar pelos dois
(My heart will love for the both of us)”
