Ok, then! Time to take a closer look at the five qualifiers from the second Eesti Laul semi-final. This completes the line-up in the final on Saturday and we’re looking forward to a great show!

Liis Lemsalu – “Keep Running”

Has Mello-reject written all over it, meaning rather soulless assembly line pop, performed by a reasonable talented ex talent show participant, who’s trying her best to make the most of the trite lyrics and the lazy nanana chorus. Next, please!

Koit Toome ja Laura – “Verona”

This is as close to Eurovision royalty we get in Estonia. Koit Toome participated in ESC in 1998, which we have no recollection of whatsoever (we were probably too drunk, was he any good?) and Laura in 2005 with the girl band Suntribe which we do remember, unfortunately. Together they have dished up one of the biggest pre contest favorites within the fan community this year, and we can’t deny we’re smitten ourselves. Who doesn’t recognize the feeling of being lost at sea like boats and how annoying it is to misplace medium size Italian towns? We imagine stacks of towns just sitting there on the shelves in the lost and found depots at airports and railway stations across Europe, waiting to be picked up by their owners. But most of us are just too lazy to bother. Good thing we have Koit and Laura to walk that extra mile!

Daniel Levi – “All I Need”

Bouncy song with a strong hook by dapper Daniel Levi, what’s not to like? His vocals are a little sketchy and for some incomprehensible reason he’s engulfed in pitch darkness and laser beams for most of the performance. What a waste of good looks. Can someone fire the scenographer and find us the biggest, meanest floodlight lantern before next Saturday, please?

Rasmus Rändvee – “This Love”

Well hello there handsome, a polkadotted shirt has never looked hotter! We’re loving the lyrics on the backdrop making it easy to sing along after a few glasses of chardonnay. We’ll definitely come looking for Rasmus Rändvee at the afterparty.

Kerli – “Spirit Animal”

Given the pimp slot in the running order we’re assuming this one won the semi-finals. Or maybe this slot is reserved by default for the biggest star competing in this year’s edition of Eesti Laul. And yes, it’s a great way to end the show as Kerli gives a tight and dynamic performance, she’s a pro and she knows it. Still, it leaves us a little cold. Isn’t the whole package a tiny tad pretentious and charmless? There’s a limit to how much pouting and twitching and jerking we can take in less than three minutes. But perhaps that’s just us. We promise to go back to nipping sherry with our dry biscuits next Monday.

  1. Not really feeling enthusiastic about Estonia this year, which is a pity. Estonia is usually quite good, as eurovision good goes. Spirit Animal seems to have the edge over the others at the beginning, but it goes sour very quickly. Maybe This Love for me, then. Meh.

By the way, if I’m allowed to be VERY off topic, what would you think of this, if we sent it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7Dp-UM24q0 I’d be really interested to know what you think of it. Cheers!

    1. We think Eesti Laul has a strong field this year and we’d be fine with almost half of the entries winning. We guess Kerli will walk it, which we wouldn’t be thrilled about, but we’ll live with it.

Salvador Sobral is sensational. If he wins Festival da Canção it will become one of the entries that really stands out this year. What’s your opinion?

  2. Totally skipped Verona, lol. Not really my thing, but one has to recognize it is quite good in its kind. It looks like Estonia has a special knack for duets, as of lately.

    1. This song wraps up everything we love about Eurovision in a perfect gift to the hardcore fans with a bow on it.

  3. My opinion of Salvador Sobral is the same as yours…. I’m very excited and also very much afraid we aren’t clever enough to pick him. Totally falling apart with anxiety and looking forward for this week to be over! 😀
