It’s already been 5 years since Russia’s first win in ESC and by the look of it, the Russians are starting to get serious about winning again. Luckily there was a certain Swede to save us from the horrific Babushkas last year, and perhaps it was to the Russians’ own surprise they came so close to winning. Regardless, they did not take any chances with hosting a national final this year and went for the internally selected Dina Garipova and fed her a Swedish made monster ballad.
So where to begin? Let’s start with establishing the fact that this song is complete and utter guff, cynically created to lure good people back home to vote in droves. Don’t we just all want to get along, live in peaceful coexistence and bury our guns? If we had any guns to bury that is, suppose that’s an issue far more relevant in Russia than most other places. The babyfaced Ms Garipova doesn’t fool us with her frumpy outfit and pretended passion. We don’t believe one single word of her message and knowing that she’s actually studying to become a journalist, she should perhaps worry more about freedom of press and the persecution many of her future colleagues in Russia suffer under, instead of being the poster girl for this propaganda.
There’s just something so incredibly smug about the whole setting, especially the nauseating preview video, probably created to make absolutely sure that everyone gets the message of the song. To help those who have drowned their last pair of brain cells in vodka and/or do not understand a word of English. Screw the understated and subtle, bring on a full-fledged display of tasteless vulgarities!
We’re starting to get seriously fed up with a few of these Swedish composers, who obviously don’t mind selling their souls just to earn a few bucks. Where’s the integrity? If the Russians win the whole shebang in Malmö, we’re considering giving up on the whole Eurovision business. Yuck! Hopefully the juries won’t fall for this tripe. So if Russia’s ever going to miss out on making it through to the Grand Final, now is a good time.
Agree with you again. It *is* utter guff! Who are they trying to fool?
You make an interesting point about the integrity of Swedish songwriters. Unfortunately the song has a whiff of propaganda about it.
I find the whole concept a bit nauseous frankly.
Hopefully Europe will not be fooled by this. However, we didn’t think the juries would support the Babushkas either, so that makes us a bit worried…
The babushkis were not ecactly musically grand (who is in this show anyway?) but they were nice, they were truly sweet and they were different from anything anyone had ever seen. I mean, how many peasant old women do you know had the guts to embark on such an adventure and carry it on?
This is just nothing, one has heard it a million times before and didn’t think much of it in the first time either. Besides, there’s Georgia and a few others to split the votes with 😉
Yeah, we never quite got the fascination with those grannies, but we suppose it was a bit of innocent fun. This one on the other hand, can’t be further from it.
Who directed this music video? Was it the cleaning lady of the Russian TV? I hope so as I can’t find any other explanation for which this is so bad.
Lol, that’s more like an insult to Russian TV’s cleaning ladies, we’re sure they could do better than this:)
